#romanroads #swell #gloucestershire This episode I explain how a Roman road had a Dark Age name that was misapplied to 9ne of its neighbours and make the case for why it should be where it should be. I go over some of the Anglo-Saxon charter of Swell to explain this. It can be found here: https://langscape.org.uk/descriptions... The text is reproduced here for your delectation: of foss dun be ƿulfƿeard-inge lea æfter ðam grenan ƿege ofer1 peos hylle · ofer peos hyll þæt cymð into mær ƿylle · of mær ƿylle up æfter ðam heafde besuðan hættes laƿe into þere ealdan dic · of ðere ealdan dic besuðan þam longam beorge ƿestriht be þam heafdan þæt it cymeð into hundes hylle · sƿa norð into buggilde stræt þæt cymeð to stret beorge · of stræt beorge into þam grena ƿege , sƿa æfter þam grena ƿege ƿestriht into fildene ƿege · æfter fildene ƿege þæt it cymeð to roces mere · and sƿa be ðere stige on norþhalde codes byrig þæt cymeð into tƿam beorgum · of tƿam beorgum ofer buggilde stræt be þam heafdum þæt cymeð into hrisc pytte · of hris pytte innon ðene litle beorh · of þam litle beorge in ðone tƿiselede beorh , sƿa eastƿeard be þam heafdan þæt cymeð innon ƿenric · of ƿenric innon þam ealdan dic , of ðere ealdan dic in þæt fule sic· æfter þam fule sic in þa bradan furh , æfter ðere bradan furh innon þa heafda · æfter þam heafdam þæt cymeð in þa salt hearpan · sƿa suð æfter salt hearpan þæt cymað into þam slæde · æfter þam slæde innon þa ðreo beorgas · of þam ðreom beorgum ondlong þere fureh þæt it cymeð into foss · sƿa suð æfter foss þæt it cymeð þer it ær agann into ƿulfƿeard-inge lea · These history walk videos are about the English landscape in and around the south west of England (though I make the odd foray into Wales). I often use ancient charters (such as Saxon charters) to give me insight into the way the landscape was viewed in the past. But it is not the Saxons that interest me the most (though they do) but the prehistoric world and its ancient monuments, trackways and ditches. #Archaeology #oldenglishcharters #antiquarians #historywalks #britishhistory
