Push horizontally on a block down low and it will slide, push on the same block up high and it will tip. In this problem we will find the critical point that separates tipping from sliding. This problem relies on torque around the pivoting corner by both the push force as well as gravity. It also uses linear forces such as the push force and the force by friction to create an equality in the horizontal axis. Putting both torque and linear forces together we generate an equation that can be used to determine whether the block will tip or slide. Rearranging the solution allows us to find the coefficient of friction by pushing on a block with an UNKNOWN force, and knowing only the dimensions of the block and where we are pushing, determine the coefficient of friction between the block and the surface it rests on. This problem comes up in introductory physics courses including AP Physics 1, AP Physics C, it also appears on the A Level physics as well as JEE exams.
