In April 1864, at Pukehinahina Gate Pā in Tauranga, Māori defenders stood against one of the most powerful military forces in the world. Armed with determination, deep knowledge of the land, and brilliantly engineered trench systems, Ngāi Te Rangi and their allies prepared for a confrontation that would echo far beyond the Bay of Plenty. When British troops launched their assault after heavy bombardment, they expected a swift victory. Instead, they walked into one of the most stunning tactical defeats of the New Zealand Wars. Carefully designed bunkers and concealed firing positions turned artillery advantage into confusion, and the battle left British forces reeling. This video explores the story behind the Battle of Gate Pā, and what it meant for Tauranga and Aotearoa. Today, Gate Pa, Pukehinahina remains a place of remembrance, resilience, and enduring mana.
