Part 1 - Field tile layout and installation: • Old World Slate tiles must be installed to a minimum of 15/32 in. CDX plywood deck or equal • For complete substrate preparation, product handling & other pre-construction considerations, please consult printed documentation. • All flashings and appropriate ice and water shield must be installed before installation. • Brava Slate can be applied in a variety of patterns, the most common is a single straight-line course of tiles. • Installation begins with a row of tapered starter pieces which measure 12 inches by 14 inches. • Begin by locating the center of the roof area to be covered, snap a vertical line from eave to ridge. • Place a starter piece on either side of the line with an overhang of 1 inch off the eave and fasten with 2 noncorrosive ring shank roofing nails at a length that will penetrate the roof decking 3/16 inch. • Snap a horizontal chalk line as a reference and place the first starter course. • Space starter pieces 3/8 inches apart. • Extend the starters 1/4 inch past the overhang drips at gable ends. • If a starter piece must be cut to complete the course, place the factory edge to the outside. • Start the first course of Slates. • Brava Slates are 24 inches in length and 12 inches in width. • Place the first slate on the starter tiles centering its center marks it on the vertical chalk line, fasten Slates over the starter pieces. • Fasten with 2 noncorrosive ring shank roofing nails at a length that will penetrate the roof decking 3/16 inch into the pre-marked nail hole indicators. • Continue to both ends. • Provide a minimum of 3/8 inch spacing between Slates. • Start the second course with a 6 inch, half tile, setback from the course below. • Align the tile between the center locators from the lower course. • Set the exposure by aligning the exposure lines with the top of the lower course. • Repeat the process to complete the field tile installation.
