Acrylic and Charcoal on 6" x 6" canvas panels attached to a backing board with strong velcro strips. A metamorphic artwork. Iv'e just discovered this video which had been filmed a couple of years ago when I began this metamorphic artwork. I had trouble filming this one and it was difficult to light. I have a better camera set up now and the lights I use for filming are much improved. I have managed to edit this together and improve the quality and thought it would be good to show how this work began. USE THE TIME STAMPS TO SKIP THROUGH THE DEMO 0:00 This is a metamorphic artwork and will be constantly changed, I will use mainly acrylic paint and charcoal but will also try chalk markers or acrylic spray paint. The panels will be re-arranged to inspire the next stage. Begin with 30 canvas panels each measure 6" x 6" and are fixed in place with strong velcro tape. 0:33 The first marks are made with a thick piece of willow charcoal and I begin to improvise the marks and allow the composition to develop. 1:09 Use variety with the shape and thickness of line but be careful not to overwork this stage. Leave areas free from clutter to guide your eyes around the composition. 1:29 The first application of acrylic paint (Cadmium Red and Yellow Ochre). Sometimes I like to paint over unfixed charcoal, to achieve interesting blends and tones. 4:03 Spray the panels with a suitable fixative spray (not filmed) before continuing with another layer of charcoal sketching. 4:22 Working over the accidental marks made by the brushwork, I begin to pick out random shapes and details. 6:32 Second paint layer, I work over unfixed charcoal again to develop areas of contrast and soften some of the charcoal lines. 6:59 It can help to judge the balance of the composition if you turn it around to see from a different viewpoint. A mirror is useful for this as well and even taking photographs on your phone, it helps to see things that you may have missed, it is only instinctive and gives you that distance from the artwork. 7:13 Blend the charcoal with your fingers before applying a final few coats of fixative spray. 8:04 End of part 1. The finished work, although because this is a metamorphic artwork it will never be finished, this is really just the beginning. 8:35 Transforming the panels. New arrangement. The metamorphosis has begun. For other films in this series and to watch the progression of the metamorphic artwork please see the playlist. Mono printing booklet now available from the website.
