Celebrating Ganesh in Mumbai (2013)

In 2013, artist Diane Kempler traveled to the village of Pen to observe artisans creating the statues and to Mumbai to experience the celebration of the statues in the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deity of intellect and wisdom. A 10-day Hindu annual festival, Ganesh Chaturthi, marks his birthday. During the festival, pujas (prayer services) are performed in front of Ganesh statues, located in both private and public places. On the final day, thousands of processions converge on the beach to immerse the statues in the sea for their return to the earth.
