In the vast natural world, there are creatures that make people wary even if they accidentally touch them. Centipedes are one of them. With a long body, many legs and the ability to attack as fast as lightning, centipedes have become a nightmare for many people. Although scary, centipedes are an important link in the ecosystem and have extremely unique biological characteristics. Centipedes are arthropods of the Chilopoda class, often living in humid environments such as rotten soil, rock crevices, tree roots or in layers of fallen leaves. The centipede's body is flat, divided into many segments, each segment has a pair of legs, and the total number of legs can be up to 354, depending on the species. They have a pair of very sensitive antennae to help them find their way in the dark, and especially the front pair of legs has been transformed into fangs containing venom. Centipedes are carnivores, they use venom to hunt and digest their prey. Their diet includes worms, earthworms, small insects, and even small mice or lizards. When threatened, centipedes can attack in self-defense, and the bites of some large centipedes such as Scolopendra subspinipes can cause severe pain, swelling, and even anaphylactic shock in people with sensitive skin. Despite their reputation as scary and dangerous, centipedes actually play an important role in controlling the population of harmful insects and pests. In many cultures, centipedes are also used in traditional medicine to treat diseases, but their use must be done with extreme caution and under the supervision of experts. Centipedes are both formidable and precious creatures in nature. Understanding them correctly helps us know how to prevent and handle bites, and at the same time view their role more objectively and fairly. Nature is a wonderful balance, and every species – including centipedes – has a reason to exist within that biological circle.
