South Africa has prolific wildlife. It is one of the world leaders in the field of conservation and has set aside vast areas for the preservation of its animals and flora. Oudtshoorn is around five hours drive from Cape Town and is the feather capital of the world owned mainly to the flourishing ostrich industry. The ostrich is over 120 million years old. It rests, pecks and runs, has an incredibly small head on a long neck, also as man has recently found out their strong legs are perfect for racing. The racecourse is short around 200 yards. Believe it or not, the ostrich can run up to 40 miles an hour, although not in this event. The racing does not last that long around 30 - 40 seconds but it’s a fun and amusing way to attract tourists to ostrich park and the animals aren't hurt in any way.
