Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center, a decommissioned five-story jail barge that was towed away for scrap metal in November 2025. Known informally as "The Boat," it was the last operating prison ship in the United States. The 625-foot-long barge was built in 1989 and opened in 1992 as a temporary solution for overcrowding at Rikers Island during the crack cocaine era. It was decommissioned in 2023, and the site is being considered for conversion into a marine terminal as part of a city initiative to reclaim the waterfront. The facility faced significant criticism over its conditions, which some advocates described as "nightmarish" and a "modern-day slave ship". #jail #jailbreak #thevernonbain #theboat #vernonbain#vernoncbain #rikersislandstories #rikersisland #maritime #life #fishing #automobile #blackmentalhealthmatters #bluewater #boat #calmwaters #duet #duvalcounty
