My dad used to sing this song to me. I remember sitting on his lap and carefully listening to every word of the song. I found the lyrics so sad and melancholic that I would often cry when he sang this song. My dad would ask: “Why are you crying? “ and I would answer: ”No kun se oli saanut sen erokirjan“ (because she had been left all alone)” I think this is quite typical to Finnish songs; You can have a seemingly cheerful melody but underneath the lyrics are much darker than what the melody would suggest. Here is my (very free) translation of the song : The girl sat on the rock and the rock was smooth and water was circling around and around … She cried and she cried and she cried so much and water was circling around and around… Alone , so alone , so alone she was , and water was circling around, and around, and around … Anne Whattoff joins me in singing this song. She was my student of Finnish music many years ago. She is a great musician, teacher, mom and a force of nature! Percussion John Bergamo From my 2001 CD Arctic Silence All Rights Reserved
