Taken on 1/25/26. Video of an 8-Car R179 (M) Shuttle Train operating from Essex Street in Manhattan to Middle Village - Metropolitan Avenue in Queens during Winter Storm Fern. Service operated as usual via the Williamsburg Bridge, the Broadway portion of the Jamaica Line, and the Myrtle Avenue Line. This weekend shuttle operated with a full length train...with a major catch. Due to a directive from supervision, the (J) and (M) operated without traditionally opening doors on a usual trip. This was in large part to avoid potential door failures during the trip. Instead, one door panel near the cabs of the train on the 1st, 4th, and 5th cars were manually opened (on some trains apparently the 8th car as well). To make this process less arduous, there were crews of at least four employees onboard many trains to open door panels and step out to signal to riders where to board. The larger crew size and boarding operations mimicked that seen on the railroads boarding process (including but not limited to LIRR/MNRR), where trains may only open a few doors at some stations, and where various cars are blocked off for a variety of reasons. Boarding also took much longer because riders needed to move to an open car. In typical MTA fashion none of this was ever communicated to riders, so many of them found out while trying to get on the train (compounding the delays in dwell time). In some extreme instances, the platforms were not cleaned and getting to/from the doors was another issue. The late January winter storm brought over a foot of snow in many parts of NYC and the metro area. This was a major storm spanning large swaths of the United States as well as Canada and Mexico, which had the potential to cause significant disruptions to transit system. Despite the amount of snowfall, freezing rain, and winds, there were periodic suspensions on many of the above ground portions of the system, and in some parts of the underground system. There were significant delays because of the weather conditions. A rundown of the trip will be provided soon. Thanks for watching! Like and subscribe for more content!
