What is Ecological Forestry? Why is it important now more than ever? Where does it fit in a Wildlands and Woodlands integrated approach to conservation? To explore these questions, we asked Dr. Tony D’Amato—Director of the Forestry Program at the University of Vermont—to assemble a group of practitioners to share their perspectives in the Spring 2025 issue of From the Ground Up. This 40-minute panel discussion is followed by a live audience Q&A. Our panelists—leading foresters, ecologists, and conservationists—dive into the principles, ethics, and future of ecological forestry. Panelists include: Sam Brown, a forester in Maine, currently serving on the Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District board Tony D’Amato, Professor of Silviculture and Applied Forest Ecology and Director of the Forestry Program and Research Forests at the University of Vermont Brian Donahue, Professor Emeritus of American Environmental Studies at Brandeis University, and a farm and forest policy consultant Guy Dunkle, Director of Land Management at the Foundation for Sustainable Forests David Foster, ecologist, Director Emeritus of the Harvard Forest, and President Emeritus of the Highstead Foundation Annie Socci Maloney, Executive Director at the Foundation for Sustainable Forests Rick Morrill, a consulting forester in Northern Vermont Liz Thompson, moderator and Managing Editor of From the Ground Up and a longtime plant ecologist and conservationist based in northwestern Vermont
