Jerusalem occupies a central place in medieval Islamic imagination despite never forming part of the canonical pilgrimage. In this video, Dr Fadi Ragheb guides us through the Faḍāʾil al-Quds tradition, texts that argued for the city’s sanctity by assembling scripture, prophetic memory, and sacred geography. Tracing the genre from its early formulations to the beginnings of its expansion under the Mamlūks (1250-1517), he shows how writing, devotion, and visitation became mutually reinforcing. He also situates this literature within modern scholarship, examining how historians have come to view Jerusalem’s holiness not as a fixed inheritance, but as a process shaped over centuries through texts that mapped, narrated, and elevated the city. Fadi Ragheb is a historian of the central Islamic lands during the Age of the Crusades. He completed his Ph.D. in Islamic History at the University of Toronto, where he also served as Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream (CLTA), offering courses on Arabic and Islamic History. His doctoral dissertation, (available here: https://utoronto.scholaris.ca/items/c...) addressed the history of Islamic pilgrimage to Mamluk Jerusalem during the later Age of the Crusades, and a book version of his dissertation has been submitted for publication. #Islam #Crusades #Jerusalem #Mamluks #MedievalHistory
