Hello everyone- how do you do. A week or so today, I shared a photo of the PFD (Primary Flight Display), showing an aircraft at FL400 or 40,000 feet. The lower right portion indicated that the aircraft was maintaining a flight level as ‘STD’ - short for standard altimeter setting was set. The aviation standard setting is 1013.2 Hecto pascals/Millibars (whatever convention you use). Instead of setting 1013 as we climb through the changeover altitude, known as the ‘Transition Altitude, on the B747 we simply push the ‘STD’ button on EFIS control panel which does the same thing. Only difference is that it does not display 1013.(Behind that ‘STD’ is in fact the 1013 that other aircraft types show). During cruise as we approach our descent point we obtain the destination weather data which gives us the arrival QNH for landing. It is standard practice to pre-select this so that as we cross the ‘Transition Level’ on descent, we push the same ‘STD’ button to replace it with the pre-selected QNH. Watch the video and you’ll see what I mean. Hope it makes sense. ‘Chi Di Gin!’- Later✈️✈️✈️✈️
