Chessie's litter is doing so well after their first week! We are so excited to do the Parent Trap theme to coincide with Chessie's final litter. We are unsure of which kittens will have which names, but we are going to be using all of the names for the bigger characters; Hal, Annie, Nick, Elizabeth, Meredith, Martin, Chessie (Jr), and Charles (Grandpa). The first week is always one of, if not, the toughest weeks, especially with Chessie. She tried to move her kittens and sometimes succeeded in carrying one under the bed. We always brought it back to the litter and she seems to have settled in. She also has a bad habit of sometimes lying on top of her kittens. We caught her a few times this week lying down on a few of them, but we were able to catch it fairly quick. We usually don't sleep a lot the first week of Chessie's new litters, but it is our responsibility to make sure the kittens are well tended to. A few of their eyes have already opened, so the next step would be to see what color they will turn, which should be around 6 weeks. They will go from blue, to gray, then finally green or gold. Kovu is going to his new home here in about a week. We wish we could have used him for one more litter, but we will be keeping one of his offspring instead. The kittens are moving around pretty well by crawling. They are sleeping and nursing a lot, which is normal for their first week and critical to their early stages of development. They haven't had any concerns come up and they have all more than doubled in size! The next step is to continue to monitor their overall health. They've been gaining a healthy amount of weight over their first week, so we'll continue to monitor that. We'll also start to socialize them with touch a little more instead of just when we're checking their weights. Aside from temperament being passed from the mama and the papa, an early introduction to socialization is another very important part in forming said temperament. But even that can only go so far. Sometimes a kitten can seem very distant and antisocial with their litter mates, but when they go home, they open up. It could be instant, or it could take a while. Our Agatha from the Matilda litter was antisocial while she was with her litter mates, but opened up as soon as she met her forever family. Some kittens just naturally open up. But it's important to note that that is not always the case. It is still very important to follow our strict guidelines for when kittens go to their new home. We are so glad Chessie gave us such a great five litters. We appreciate her so much and we will be finding her a home with a close friend or family member so we can visit her often and keep tabs on her health as she ages.
