Three Owl Encounters Within Two Hours | Yala, Sri Lanka

Owls are such magnificent and elusive birds. Being nocturnal, they are extremely difficult to locate during the day. However, the local knowledge of fellow birders is a game-changer. In Yala, Sri Lanka, we were lucky to meet two bird enthusiasts who knew where three species of owls roosted during the day. With only a few hours left before we had to catch the bus, we rushed to the locations they shared and were so lucky to sight three owl species in just two hours. It was also cool to see how birding and bird knowledge can become a livelihood. Since all of the owl habitats were in family gardens, they are able to earn money by sharing owl locations.
