11JUN1945: Serving as a picket line off Okinawa, Lt. Richard McCool was commanding LCS(L)(3)-122 when Japanese kamikaze's approached. Focusing his fire, Lt. McCool's gunners were able to destroy one attacker but a second scored a direct hit. Blown back from the explosion and suffering severe burns and shrapnel wounds, Lt. McCool immediately set about rallying his crew. He pulled out all stops to reduce the massive fires burning and directed the actions of his men in an attempt to save the ship. In this same window, he noticed a crew member trapped in a burning compartment. Lt. McCool, with no concern for his own personal safety, charged into the compartment and pulled the trapped sailor free. Through his focused and calm leadership during this intense period, Lt. McCool was able to salvage the ship saving the lives of untold members of his crew. The Medal of Honor is the highest and most prestigious personal military decoration awarded for valor to US service members. There have been 3,525 Medals of Honor awarded since it's inception in 1861. Instagram: / warstoriesusa TikTok: / prestonstew Podcast: https://anchor.fm/warstoriesusa
