Planet: Caeron-5 Star: Aeyari Prime Region: The Ash Mantle They called it a listening world. Not for the wind—though it never stops whispering across the plains—but for the towers. There are six that we’ve located so far, spaced irregularly across the high desert plateaus of Caeron-5. The structures were once scientific outposts, or maybe something more. They resemble observatories, with domed instruments on top and scaffolding that seems almost theatrical in scale. But no one answers the frequencies anymore. The place has gone dark… centuries ago, by our best guess. The approach was turbulent. Dust storms roll in from the equatorial fault lines every six hours, stirred by convective pulses from the twin moons. One of our nav-thrusters failed during descent. Kintari managed to keep us from skidding into a canyon wall. The Ardent Signal is undergoing repairs as I write. We’ve established a base near Outpost Theta. The air is breathable with rehydration, but thin. Gravity runs at 0.78 Earth Gs—enough to move easily but not enough to forget you’re not home. I climbed the western observation platform today. The view is unreal: reddish terrain stretched to infinity, scarred by forgotten tectonics. The silence is complete, except for the creak of aged metal and the low rumble of wind trapped between ruined corridors. Lights flicker on without any evident power source. We found solar arrays buried under ash and time, still tracking some lost sun. Inside, there's graffiti. Not vandalism—prayers, or warnings. "THEY HEAR IN THE QUIET." Another reads: "DO NOT WAKE THE SKY." Who wrote them? Colonists? Pilgrims? Refugees from the collapse? There are no records in the archives, not even a planetary registration under this star system. It’s like Caeron-5 was erased. Yet the instruments still hum faintly, tuned to unknown spectra. One of them—an old spectro-analyzer—responds to something outside the visible range. It emitted a tone this morning that made Thalen sit upright, as if he’d been jolted from a dream. We are beginning to suspect that the planet is not empty. Just… indifferent. Or patient. I’ve set an auto-recorder on the dome's apex. It plays back at 4:00 every morning. What I hear in those recordings is hard to explain—not a signal. More like… memory. I think this world remembers us. Or someone like us. — *Cmdr. Lira Anvek | DSS Ardent Signal “To be alone is not to be forgotten.
