(29 Apr 2014) Paramilitary soldiers patrolled the streets of Srinagar on Tuesday ahead of general elections in Indian-controlled parts of the disputed Kashmir region on Wednesday. Authorities have detained more than 600 Kashmiri residents ahead of the polls opening, Indian police said on Tuesday. Rebels and separatist politicians have urged Kashmiris to boycott the election, which they call a "military exercise" by an overbearing New Delhi. Officials at polling stations in the region have expressed concerns about a lack of security arrangements following violent protests at an earlier round of voting last Thursday. Voting is being held over several days in the restive region so security forces can better guard the polls. Indian Kashmir elects only six members of India's 543-seat Parliament. Results are expected on 16 May.
