Why Artificial Disc Replacement? | Motion Preservation with Dr. Todd Lanman

Dr. Todd Lanman has a long history treating patients with medical complications from spinal problems. An advocate for motion preservation surgery for more than 25 years, his goal is to make his neck and back pain patients greater than better.   He sees a lot of patients from all walks of life. Some are actors and professional athletes; some are business executives and entrepreneurs; most are average people of all ages that have neck and back pain issues that are so severe that they need medical help. Dr. Lanman feels that his work begins with solutions so that they can quickly go back to their active lives.   Most of his patients have done extensive research on their own so that they know what they’re looking for. By the time they have their first consultation with Dr. Lanman, they already know that he's done extensive, long-term research and clinical trials for artificial disc replacement surgery.   Dr. Lanman also has the benefit of being a back surgery patient. He has one cervical fusion and one cervical artificial disc. He also has three lumbar artificial discs. Patients can see that much of his work has been from the perspective of a patient who wants to keep moving and stay active as he ages. He says, "I have no desire to introduce procedures like spinal fusion that will prevent me from keeping the full movement of my spine. As I tell my patients: movement is life. You need to keep all the movement that you can to live life to its fullest."   No surprise then that he treats his patients to solve their neck and back pain; not from what is on the MRI film. He treats so that his patients can enjoy the benefits of the best that medicine can do for them. Currently, the best that medicine can offer for most neck and back pain cases is artificial disc replacement surgery.   This is not to say that it’s the only solution. Nor is it the first treatment strategy that D. Lanman will recommend. That's why he will spend a great deal of time digging into the various dimensions of each patient's life. He’ll analyze lifestyle, activities, work, and leisure. He gets patients to identify their near-term and long-term goals. He wants to know what their work days are like and what they do weekends. He'll even analyze how patients use their technology - laptops, computers, pads, and phones. Depending on the unique situation that's revealed, Dr. Lanman may recommend a program that may include physical therapy, fitness, nutrition, supplements, and some pain management. He may also recommend less invasive outpatient microsurgery procedures that can solve your problems quickly, or he may suggest ADR for a more permanent solution for your neck or back pain. He is a board-certified neurosurgery specialist practicing medicine for 25 years with a private practice in Beverly Hills, CA. He specializes in the treatment of spinal disorders and is a leading clinical advocate for artificial disc replacement surgery. Dr. Lanman is a professor at the University of California Los Angeles, and a member of the Cedars-Sinai Institute of Spinal Disorders. Dr. Lanman has published more than ten peer-reviewed articles, as well as book chapters on topics relating to neurological surgery, and has presented more than two dozen papers at national and regional medical society meetings. He has been tapped by colleagues to be the principal medical investigator on a broad swath of clinical trials for motion preserving surgeries and artificial disc replacement devices, most recently the Prestige LP and M6, with the former recently receiving FDA pre-market approval in 2016 with his continuous support and advocacy. He graduated from Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago, IL with top honors and is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed a general surgery internship and neurological surgery residency at UCLA. He is an active member of many professional societies and organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS), North American Spine Society (NASS), and Fellow American College of Surgeons. Dr. Lanman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS).
