A growing push to stop Australian sheep producers cutting skin off their animals' bottoms, a practice known as "mulesing", is exposing the tension between the farm and the fashion industry. NSW wool producer David Young does not do it to be cruel, but to protect them against flystrike, a lethal condition that is prevalent among Merino sheep grown in hotter Australian climates. The procedure has become increasingly targeted by animal activists in Australia who are spreading photos of bloody sheep widely. Now, consumer awareness about mulesing has become so common that major brands have started to tell the Australian wool industry that they will no longer use wool that comes from mulesed sheep.
