Michael Balfe's opera, THE BOHEMIAN GIRL, was first performed in 1843. The story is about a Count's daughter who was kidnapped as a child and raised by gypsies. She has recently been reunited with her father and is living in his castle, but she has fond memories of the gypsy camp and the man she loved. He now comes to her window and sings the aria THEN YOU'LL REMEMBER ME. John McCormack recorded this song in 1908, 1914, 1916, 1925 (unpublished) and 1929 for the motion picture SONG O' MY HEART. This is the May 11, 1916 recording. When other lips and other hearts Their tales of love shall tell, In language whose excess imparts The power they feel so well: There may, perhaps, in such a scene, Some recollection be Of days that have as happy been, And you'll remember me! When coldness or deceit shall slight The beauty now they prize, And deem it but a faded light Which beams within your eyes; When hollow hearts shall wear a mask, 'Twill break your own to see: In such a moment I but ask That you'll remember me!
