Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) considered himself as much an ornithologist as a composer, organist and pianist. Inspired in large part by his study of birdsong and his strong catholic faith, his output counts among the most fascinating of the twentieth century. Le Merle Noir was written 1952, is the composer's shortest independently published work and was the earliest of his pieces to be based mainly on birdsong. I decided to play the opening of the piece in the body of the piano, while the pianist is holding the pedal down, in order to create the forest-like sounds while the bird/flute are signing/playing. The effect can be fully appreciated in the live performance setting. Hope you like it :) Iva Ugrćič - flute Kyle D. Johnson - piano Dave Alcorn - audio/video recording www.davealcorn.com
