It was a crime that sent shockwaves across the country. Eric Smith, 13, beat 4-year-old Derrick Robie to death Aug. 2, 1993 in Savona, a small village in New York's Southern Tier. The young ages of the suspect and victim brought a significant amount of media attention to the case. Smith was convicted Aug. 16, 1994 of Robie's murder and later sentenced to 9 years to life in prison. He was released on parole Feb. 1, 2022.
