Throughout the day, fifteen television Outside Broadcast cameras (one mounted in a helicopter) focus on the progress of four world-famous climbers - Guido Magnone, Rene Demaison, Ian McNaught-Davis and Robert Paragot - in their attempt to scale the 1,000-ft. Tour Eiffel. Ian McNaught-Davis, seen on BBC Television last year conquering the Aiguille du Midi and Snowdon, is linked by radio microphone to Christopher Brasher (at the base of the Tower), and will talk as he climbs. David Harrison will be waiting to interview him on the first and second platforms, should he reach them. A team of experienced climbers - Lucien Bérardini, René Vernadet, Pierre Tairraz and Emile Troksiar - will film the group, using radio cameras, at various points of the climb. The weather is far from ideal - just this morning, rain and heavy winds threatened to force the cancellation the event before it could begin - but lead climber Guido Magnone has been able to convince the Paris Chief of Police that conditions are safe, and the climb will go ahead.
