How to manage Pulply kidney (enterotoxemia) in goats- CRISIS intervention

Pulply kidneys occurs in goats/ sheep when a bacterium that normally inhabits the animals' intestines without causing problems begins to multiply and produce a toxin that poisons the animal. Factors that increase the risk of Pulply kidney are: ✔️Sudden changes in diet Sudden feeding of Extremely high energy or protein diets ✔️Deworming before vaccination ( deworm at least 2 weeks after vaccination for Pulply kidney) Coccidiosis ✔️Stasis of the intestinal tract We responded to a situation where the animals started dying of pulpy kidney because they were dewormed too early after vaccination. NB The goats must be dewormed after they have built adequate immunity against pulpy kidney and this is normally after at least 2 weeks after injecting the second dose of pulpy kidney vaccine spaced at an interval of 4-6 weeks In the case we responded to, the animals were dewormed just a few days after vaccination during which the animals had not yet built adequate immunity against pulpy kidney and the deworming coupled with high energy diet, prompted the Bacteria to start producing toxins We then intervened by injecting a broad spectrum antibiotic (penicillin) and we also recommended taking the animals off high energy diet back to grazing. We also recommended revaccination to help the animals build up their immunity and we expected the animals to recover
