Sermon: "The World is Not Our Fish Tank" by Rev. Will Burhans on 2/09/25

On this cold snowy morning, I’m thinking about fish. Obviously fish were on Jesus’ mind too as he stepped into the fishing boat and put out a little ways from the shore so that he could teach from there. We don’t hear in this particular instance exactly what he taught but based upon the rest of Luke and the other Gospels we can surmise that he spoke of the nature of God’s realm and God’s reign and how it differed from so much from how humans organized the realm of this world for themselves. Maybe he spoke of the hypocrisy of the religious leaders, the need for everyone at some level or another to have a change of heart, maybe he used the hills of Galilee and the birds that flew by while he taught to open the enraptured listeners to a sense of God’s presence. And maybe talked about the fish. Because after he was done teaching he turned to Peter and said “let’s go further out into the deep waters and then cast your nets.” Peter’s response was “we’ve been fishing all night and caught nothing, but if you say to do so, I’ll do it.”
