LARRY ROSEN: The Concept that was the germ of this unique event went back one year prior to the first concert. Dave and I were asked by Kambara music (a major promoter in Tokyo) to bring a GRP ALL-star package to tour Japan. To create a GRP ALL-star package is a most expensive undertaking. A sponsor will be needed. To this end, Dentsu Advertizing, one of the largest advertising agencies in the world, come into the picture with their client, Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi corparation was preparing to launch a new hardware line in Japan called A&D. A&D is a combination of Akai Electronics and Diatone Speakers. This hardware line was positioned to reach "High-End" consumer. The quality oriented buyer. They approached us and asked if they could sponsor the GRP package because of the igh quality image GRP maintains in the marketplace. After much discussion, all thas agreed. In the June 1987, Dave and I flew of Tokyo for a press conference in order to announce the event and finalize all logistical plans. The artist package was agreed upon, and the performers were to be Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott, vocalist Diane Schuur, and Chick Corea and the Electric Band. In September 1987, we all left from different parts of the USA to meet in Tokyo and prepare for the opening concert. The event itself, as we planned, was to be very "High-Tech" in its presentation. We paid very careful attention tp the best in P.A. equipment, utilizing the ATLANTIC. mixing board and John Mayer loudspeakers. We utilized the new Mitsubishi 200" video projection system to create a multimedia event of music with pre-recorded video material. After the first concert we went on to tour Japan, appearing in Tokyo, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Osaka, Sapporo, Nagoya, Sendai, and finaly Tokyo again to digitally record this album. NHK, Japan's national T.V. network, shot a one and half hour special, for digital broadcast via satellite troughhout Japan. The results of this very special one time event are now captured on audio and video for those of you who were not there at the live concert to enjoy. He had a wonderful time working together and we hope that all of you, like the many fans that greeted us on the tour, will feel the same sense of pride and love that we have for the music, and for each other.
