SOUNDBITE (English) US Army Staff Sergeant, Azhar Mahmoud Sher: "We wanted to surprise them, that why we left early morning, but I guess they had eyes on us, they saw us coming in and they planted an improvised explosive device, IED, and that slow us down. And by the time we search the area, and all that, they were already on high ground." 21. Various of Afghan soldiers and US soldiers leaving area STORYLINE: Some 200 US-led troops took part in an operation in the remote Davudzay Bowl in Afghanistan's southeastern province of Zabul on Thursday, designed to cut a major supply and infiltration route to the Taliban. US Army soldiers of B Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, along with Afghan National Army troops, left their base before dawn, slogging through the mountainous terrain for several hours before reaching the Taliban stronghold. Along the route, a roadside bomb - probably an artillery shell - exploded, injuring one Afghan soldier and slowing down the advance. An AP cameraman embedded with US troops filmed Afghan troops tending to the officer, who was taken for treatment after reinforcements arrived. US Special Forces and the Afghans scoured the town of Davudzay, where Taliban forces had been confronted in earlier operations. Others in the force formed a ring around the area, blocking escape routes. However, it appeared that the Taliban had been aware of the advance. "We wanted to surprise them, that's why we left early morning, but I guess they had eyes on us, they saw us coming in and they planted an improvised explosive device, IED, and that slow us down. And by the time we search the area, and all that, they were already on high ground," said US Army Staff Sergeant, Azhar Mahmoud Sher. No Taliban fighters were sighted during the operation.
