First Barred Sand Bass

This clip is from a few years ago when I first started to get into fishing. I had recently purchased these kayaks and went out with my cousin ‪@OGHomey‬ for a session in the morning. Up until this point I had really only been catching bonito while trolling small swim baits outside of the harbor. But I was getting a bit bored or trolling and wanted to work on enticing reaction bites while also targeting some new species species. I had been wanting to catch some sort of bass because of how hard I heard they could fight and the thrill of feeling a reaction bite with an artificial lure. I decided to try jigging a 1 oz P-line laser minnow at around 40-60 ft of water near the King Harbor jetty. After a few bites and even a quick hook up, my confidence started to rise. I dropped back down and thump! Next thing I knew, I had a fish on and it was also my first Barred Sand Bass ever. The fish was about 12 inches, but fought like a tank. Bass suddenly became one of my favorite fish to target. It is so much fun, especially off of the kayak. I've caught plenty of Barred Sand Bass at this point, but still get so excited whenever I feel a fish slam my lure. This clip is a great memory of how I started my fishing journey and a nice reminder of keeping my fishing techniques simple. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
