Lampreys, or petromyzontiformes, are an ancient, boneless, eel-ish order of fish with sucker-mouths instead of jaws. The behemoth lamprey is a lonely and isolated creature, shrouded in the dark depths, wandering blindly. I chose the title Behemoth Lamprey because I wanted to write a piece about the “moth lamp” meme. The meme’s relatability relies on the metaphor between moths’ attraction to light and human desire for love. I’m interested in the gloomier side of this metaphor. Moths can’t save themselves from dying; the lamps that brighten the night destroy their ability to find their way. Does our desire not lead to our deaths? The gloominess of this metaphor is analogous to the image of the behemoth lamprey, which lives in a world without light altogether.
