I am a cardiothoracic surgeon and the surgical director of the Structural Heart Program here at UVA Health. I am a heart surgeon and I operate on patients with problems with the valves of their heart, problems with blockages in their heart, and the arteries that supply blood flow to the heart, patients who have problems with the rhythm of the heart and patients who have aneurysms. When a patient comes in to see me, they can expect that I will listen to them. So it's very important for me to get a complete history of the patient, listen to their symptoms, and garner what is really wrong with them. In addition, when I counsel a patient about the options, it is very important to tell them every single option they have and give them a detailed discussion about what the risks of the procedure are. Heart disease is a very serious thing, and unfortunately, people sometimes are very afraid and very scared, so I also have to reassure them and let them know that whatever advice I am given them is the same advice I will give to any family member of mine, and I'll be dedicated to taking care of them prior to their procedure, through their procedure, and after their procedure as I will expect any member of my family to be taken care of. I believe that any patient who needs advanced care or any care at all should come to UVA because we have it all. So we have a wide array of expertise and approaches to dealing with whatever problem you have because it's what suits you. And in addition, we work collaboratively with other subspecialists to make sure that you get the best care in every arena from the time you walk in to the time you leave.
