Nalanda University was one of the greatest Universites in the World. It is located in Rajgir, Bihar. It was established in 5th century by Kumaragupta I. People from different parts of the world like China, Japan, Korea, Persia, Turkey and Sri Lanka came to Nalanda for their studies. It was a Residential University. They taught different subjects like Budhism, Astronomy, Mathematics, Philosophy and Medicine. Harshavardhan, Dharmapal and Nagarjuna were some of the famous people who studied there. Entrance exam was conducted for selection and this was really tough, as 2 or 3 students out of 10 usually got selected. It was completely free for the students (fees, food, medicine and stay). King Magadha provided the money for this, by providing tax derived from 100 villages. 10000 students and 1510 teachers used to stay here. There were class rooms, bathroom, dormitory, temples, lakes and kitchen inside. The university was surrounded by a large wall and it was made by red bricks. Nalanda had the biggest Library, Dharma Ganj which had around 90 lakh books. There were 3 multi-storied building called Ratnasagar, Ratnodadhi and Ratnaranjakh. Budha Shrine was placed near to the entrance. Bathroom had good drainage system. It flourished for 800 years. Nalandha University was attacked thrice. First by Hunas, then by Gaudas and last by Turkish invader. First two times the damage was restored by the kings, but the last time damage was irrepairable. In 1193 AD Bakhtiyar Khalji destroyed Nalanda, killed many monks and set the library on fire. It is documented by Minhaj Siraj in his book Tabakat-i-Nasiri that the library kept burning for 3 months. He also destroyed Vikramshila and Odantapuri. Until 19th century, the University was forgotten. The translation of Hieun Tsang’s diary made the people aware about the existence of Nalanda. In 1862, Colonial Archaeologist Alexander Cunningham and Archaeological Survey of India surveyed the site. Excavation and restoration works were done between 1915-37 and 1974-82. 11 monastries, 6 temple and 1 giant stupa (Great Monument) were found. Only 10% of this was excavated, the rest still remains under the earth. ASI does the maintenance of this site. In 2016, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is almost 95 kms from Patna. Entrance fees is Rs.40. Working Hours: 9 am - 5 pm. I hope you liked this video. If you like it, Plz Subscribe & Share❤️👍🏼
