Malakkari Vellattam refers to the initial, ritualistic performance or "shadow" form of the Malakkari Theyyam, a prominent deity in the North Malabar region of Kerala, India. In the Theyyam tradition, a Vellattam is a simplified version of the main performance, usually held in the evening or night preceding the full Kaliyattam (the complete deity manifestation with elaborate headgear and costumes) The Deity: Malakkari is considered a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva (often associated with the hunter or Kiratha form). In some traditions, he is also linked with Yogeeswaran. Ritual Act: The performance often involves a spirited martial display known as Malakkari Payattu, where the artist demonstrates skills with traditional weapons. Appearance: During the Vellattam stage, the performer wears a smaller head-dress and simpler body paint compared to the main Malakkari Theyyam, focusing more on rhythmic movements and ritual chants.
