I owned a coffee shop for five years and have created a recipe that I use almost everyday. Coffee shops want you to think that lattes are hard to make, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact is…a latte is simply espresso and steamed milk. So, a mocha latte is simply espresso, steamed milk, and mocha. The mocha flavoring typically comes in the form of a sauce, loaded with sugar, which is why we use cocoa powder in my recipe. Cocoa powder is very low in carbs and loaded with antioxidants! So, there’s nothing magic about espresso…it’s simply finely ground coffee beans, force-brewed under pressure with no paper filter. Since I don’t own an espresso machine, I use double-strength coffee made using a French Press. In my opinion, this mimics the flavor fairly well. Also, because we’re adding flavor to the latte, there’s no need to use expensive coffee beans…I actually like to use the Kroger brand Colombian beans. Now, a coffee shop uses a steamer to aerate the milk. Instead, I was able to purchase an inexpensive frother from Bed Bath & Beyond. It works fairly well and is pretty easy to clean.
