Released in arcades in 1997 by Sega, Harley Davidson & L.A. Riders is a driving/racing game. The game gives you the opportunity to ride one of 5 iconic Harley-Davidson motorcycles around Los Angeles County, California at over 100 MPH in a point-to-point race against the clock. The 5 motorcycles do vary in performance: Fat Boy is balanced, Panhead has fewer gears and easier handling with manual transmission, Dyna Wide Glide has slightly better speed but lower acceleration, Sportster has lower top speed but the best acceleration, FXRP has the highest top speed but poor acceleration-and being a police motorcycle you can press & hold Start for a siren! It won't make other vehicles yield though. You start each game in Santa Monica and race between randomly chosen points in the map (there are roughly 10 total), between 3-5 in all depending on the settings. The difficulty is also random despite the game's settings because you don't know your what your next destination is until it happens, but if you get Downtown you have a much tougher ride because Downtown is the hardest one to get to/from. Sometimes you'll get lucky and checkpoints are close together, making for a very easy game. The game ends when you complete all stages or time runs out-you do coast a short distance at top speed before time runs out so you might get lucky and get to that next checkpoint or the end...or as you'll see twice here you might stop just painfully short! Along the way are arrows above you that will guide you to each checkpoint, and transparent Harley-Davidson icons that award bonus points when collected. A gigantic H-D logo is almost always visible to mark your next destination. 2 machines can be linked together for multiplayer racing, in which players try to be the first to each checkpoint. The winner of each segment gets bragging rights and more points. Between the gameplay and Harley-Davidson branding/tie-in, the game was very successful and remained popular in arcades for several years. In this video I play with each of the 5 available motorcycles. While there is background music it does mostly get drowned out by the default sound settings, which favor the motorcycle engine's noise. The game's controller is modeled after a real Harley-Davidson motorcycle so you feel like you're riding an actual bike! A sequel, Harley-Davidson Motor Cycles: King Of The Road, was released in arcades in 2009. There were no console versions of this game.
