Many people spoke out at the Oklahoma City Council meeting on Tuesday morning against a potential ICE detention facility in Oklahoma City. There were more than 60 people who signed up to speak during the meeting. "Citizens are standing up and we ask you as elected officials do the same," C.J. Webber-Neal said. On December 23, the Oklahoma City Planning Department received a letter from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. That letter explained the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's intent to purchase and occupy a warehouse to create a processing center to be used by ICE. The potential ICE facility would be at 2800 South Council Road in Southeast Oklahoma City. While some are in support of the potential for the facility, others have concerns they took to the Oklahoma City Council. "Use your power, whether it's authorized or whether it's symbolic, because here we know that the power of symbols is very real. If you don't, I invite you to go look at empty chairs that are sitting at the bottom of a bomb crater, not too far from here," Jack Zedlitz said. "There is power in symbolism. Use it." City councilor Camal Pennington discussed with the municipal counselor what options are available to the city council. He asked about the city's special permitting process and a potential ban on this type of facility. "So because of the Supremacy Clause, the federal government being a higher form of government, you believe that if they did not comply and we were to sue, that suit would not be successful," Pennington asked. "Correct," municipal counselor Kenneth Jordan replied. The people filling city hall on Tuesday wanted to make it clear that they do not want to see an ICE detention center in Oklahoma City. "The city has made such incredible progress in the past few years to be part of a fairer, brighter future. I feel like this facility would undo so much of that progress and I really don't want them to let that happen," Lauren Rogers told FOX 25. "I think that I'm just really sick and tired of seeing people around me and people in our community just feel completely scorned by what's going on with ICE. And I don't want to see any of my neighbors kidnapped. I don't want to see people shot and killed in the streets of Oklahoma City," Adele Marie-Alix said. The City Planning Department received the letter on December 23, but the city did not let the public or media know about the plans for the potential ICE facility until nearly a month later on January 20. That was after The Oklahoman was the first to report on it. FOX 25 asked the city the reasoning for why the city didn't release a statement until January 20. The city spokesperson said there were a few different factors at play, including the holidays and said the letter was sent to the City Planning Department first before the Mayor and City Manager knew about it. Neither the mayor nor city manager were in attendance for Tuesday's meeting because they are both out of town. Read the story: https://okcfox.com/news/local/people-... Have a tip?
