(21 Jul 2000) Spanish/Nat XFA Supporters and foes of General Augusto Pinochet demonstrated outside Chile's Supreme Court on Friday. Police kept the two factions apart and behind metal fences outside the court building in Santiago. The court is to decide whether to uphold Pinochet's appeal against a lower court ruling last month that stripped him of his congressional immunity. That would allow his trial in one of the most notorious cases of abuse of his 1973-90 dictatorship. The accusations against Pinochet stem from the "caravan of death," one of 146 criminal complaints filed against the former dictator for deaths and disappearances blamed on his regime. The caravan was a military squad that toured several Chilean cities soon after the 1973 coup led by Pinochet, dragging 72 dissidents from prison and executing them. According to an official report, 19 of the dissidents are still unaccounted for. The court has no deadline for its ruling, which cannot be appealed. Hundreds of anti-Pinochet protesters are expected to march through the capital Santiago on Friday afternoon. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The communists from here in Chile will not forgive him.
