This is Episode Two of S.E.E.K.'s ‘Eastern Esoteric Journey’, a sustained exploration of the contemplative disciplines, symbolic philosophies, and initiatory sciences that shaped the spiritual landscapes of Asia and reveal how inner cultivation aligns the human being with a larger cosmic order. Over 500 million people around the world practice Buddhism, a tradition that bridges philosophy, psychology, and spirituality. In this S.E.E.K. documentary, we explore the origins of Buddhism within ancient India, tracing its emergence from Hinduism and its unique reformation of ideas like karma, dharma, and liberation. Through the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, we follow his journey from royal birth to awakening under the Bodhi tree, and his death in final liberation, known as Parinirvana. We examine the Four Noble Truths and Eightfold Path, the practical framework for overcoming suffering through mindfulness and ethical living. Modern science has confirmed the profound mental and physical benefits of meditation and mindfulness, echoing the Buddha’s insight that liberation begins within the mind. The film delves into Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism, exploring how each school interprets the path to enlightenment. Within Mahayana, we meet the compassionate Bodhisattvas (Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, and Vajrapani) who embody mercy, wisdom, and power, alongside the feminine counterpart Tara, whose mantra “Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha” remains a call to compassion and awakening. The Dalai Lama, revered as the living embodiment of Avalokiteshvara, continues this lineage of compassionate service in the modern world. We also explore Buddhism’s Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), the Three Marks of Existence (impermanence, suffering, and non-self), and the profound concept of Anatta, or “no-soul,” which challenges Western notions of identity. Unlike the rigid frameworks of religion, Buddhism defies classification under the Six Marks of Religion outlined by Huston Smith in The World’s Religions. As the theologian Friedrich Heiler observed, Buddhism is less a religion in the traditional sense than a path toward universal cooperation among faiths. Through this study, S.E.E.K. reveals how Buddhism’s vision of tolerance allows it to harmonize with all world religions, offering an inner science of awareness accessible to anyone, regardless of belief, gender, or race. From the cosmic cycle of Samsara to the luminous peace of Nirvana, this is the story of humanity’s search for liberation from suffering, and the enduring wisdom of one who found it.
