Today’s hike, overlooking the Chewaucan River, followed an enchanting early morning 120 mile drive through the vast Oregon High Desert. Enjoy a spectacular sunrise over the distant horizon, the desert solitude, and striking landscape in every direction. It's inspiring to travel through this ruggedly beautiful land, only hours from our home. The hike from Chewaucan Crossing Trailhead is just as beautiful as the desert drive, but in a very different way. A hidden gem, we encountered not a single other hiker along the trail. It's another segment of the Oregon Desert Trail, which we’ll be exploring more in the months ahead. This video was shot during an October road trip. More details about the drive: A few miles east of Burns, we headed south on Rt. 395, stopped for the spectacular sunrise, and passed Wagontire (population: 3) a ways before our turn onto Hogback Road, a 31 mile gravel road to Plush. Google maps won't send you on this gravel road (though you can see it on their map). It is captivating if your vehicle is up to it. After coffee at the Hart Mountain Store in Plush, we continued on towards Paisley via OR-140, then a short leg of US-395, and finally OR-31. From Paisley, we traveled south on Forest Service (FS) Road 33 for about 8 miles to the trailhead. More details about the hike: The trail in this video doesn't have an official name, other than a section of "Fremont National Recreation Trail # 160."
