Barcelona show off revamped Camp Nou stadium

Barcelona showed off the current state of the construction of the new Spotify Camp Nou stadium on Tuesday. The Catalan club hoped to have it ready to open next Sunday when the first team hosts Real Sociedad with a limited capacity of 27,000 seats - but authorities have determined that the stadium has yet to meet the safety standards. Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain will be played at the Olympic Stadium, its home for the previous two seasons. Barcelona had hoped to return to a newly renovated Camp Nou at the start of this season, but delays in construction have forced it to play elsewhere. The club has decided that it will host PSG at the 55,000-seat Olympic Stadium after it had been forced to face Valencia and Getafe in their first two home games of the Spanish league season at its tiny Estadi Johann Cruyff which only seats 6,000 and is located outside the city. During the media day the authorities told the media that they aim to reach to a deal with UEFA which would allow them to play the rest of the league stage of the Champions League at the new Camp Nou with the number of seats increasing as build works progress. Currently there are 62,000 seats which are located in the inner core of the stadium, built in 1957. The rest of the seats will be located in the upper tier, currently being built as the outer skin of the new stadium. With the upper tier estimated to be completed during the second half of 2026, the revamped Camp Nou will regain the title of Europe’s largest stadium, with a new total seat capacity expected at 105,000.
