First physical Shein store met with furious protests and controversy at Paris grand opening

Online fast-fashion behemoth Shein will this week unveil its first permanent physical store anywhere in the world in Paris, sparking political backlash, anger among workers and stark warnings from city officials that the move risks scuffing the capital’s progressive image. The Singapore-based retailer, founded in China, has built a vast digital empire despite persistent criticism over labour conditions in its supply chain and the environmental cost of ultra-cheap, disposable clothing. Having previously tested short-term pop-ups, Shein will on Wednesday open a long-term outlet on the sixth floor of Paris’s storied BHV department store, a landmark opposite the city hall since 1856.
