An impressionistic collage, all tone and atmosphere. Not a line of dialogue is spoken, but we get some elliptical details through an unidentified omniscient narrator. We learn Theo, the lead, has recently watched a man die outside a pizza parlor, and that his own mother died the very same day. Other than that, it's existential darkness via fleeting images of hazy dance clubs, seedy sex, long showers and tattoo parlors. The film does a smart thing: the images and narration don't exactly match. We're given two separate layers, no mirrors, no repetition, which leaves us wanting more. November is produced by Painted Stage Pictures, an up-and-coming group that includes Nicholas Bateman (dir: The Circus Animals) who edits here, alternating between razor-precise and punk-raw, and cinematographer, David Ross, who uses a hazy, post-romance look, similar to his work on The Circus Animals. NB contributor Ethan Millspaugh confidently stars and directs.
