Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org/ Ninja Nerds! Join us for this lecture where Professor Zach Murphy will present the anatomy of the ear using a detailed anatomical model. We begin by examining the external ear, including the auricle (pinna) and external acoustic meatus, and their roles in collecting and directing sound waves toward the tympanic membrane. From there, we move into the middle ear, exploring the tympanic membrane, auditory ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes), and the oval and round windows. We also discuss the function of the auditory tube (Eustachian tube) in equalizing pressure across the tympanic membrane and its clinical significance in ear infections. Finally, we dive into the inner ear, detailing the cochlea, vestibule, and semicircular canals. You will learn how the cochlea converts sound vibrations into neural signals and how the vestibular apparatus detects head position and movement to maintain balance. We tie this together with an overview of the vestibulocochlear nerve (cranial nerve VIII) and its dual role in hearing and equilibrium.
