Violent Police Beat Black Teen

Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 7pm a Black teen was viciously arrested by Madison police outside of East Towne Mall. Genele Laird was kneed in her stomach multiple times by two police officers. She was also punched in the back while being pinned to the ground. Then after being pinned by the two officers she was tased multiple times. In the video you hear her screaming and crying. At the end of the video she says “I can’t breathe, if I f***ing die--“, and then the video cuts off. The name and age of the child is unknown. The violence that we see in the video is very common by the hands of Madison Police Department. They are known by Madison’s Black community to be ruthless during arrest and are more likely to target Black people. No child should be beat up for yelling. Black children are less likely to be seen as children. Black youth are disproportionately criminalized. They are 11 times as likely to be suspended in schools and 80% of the juvenile detention center is filled with Black kids. We need power over police policies and practices. This is why Freedom Inc has called for Community Control of the Police. If we had community control of the police, Black teen girls would not be beaten and tortured. Demand accountability now!
