Buttonhole Couching Stitch The buttonhole couching stitch uses the buttonhole stitch to couch thread. Or is other words it used the buttonhole stitch to hold thread in place. This stitch is part of the couching stitch family. Use this DIY video and step-by-step tutorial to learn how to embroider the buttonhole couching stitch. Start the buttonhole couching stitch by stitching the laid thread. In this example it's the green thread. This can be loose thread or long stitches. Next use a second thread and the buttonhole stitch to stitch over the laid thread. The buttonhole stitches should overlap the laid thread and not stitch through it. To create the buttonhole stitch, start by bringing the needle up in the bottom corner of the laid thread. Hold the thread towards the opposite side of where the thread is coming out of the fabric and bring the needle back into the fabric about 1/4 an inch away from where the thread is coming out of the fabric. Gently tug the thread so that is creates a loop. Bring the needle up through the loop, on the outside edge of the laid thread. Tug so that the loop is flush with the fabric. Now repeat. Hold the thread and bring the needle back into the fabric on the opposite side of the laid thread. Gently tug to that working thread creates a loop. Then bring the needle up through the loop on the outside edge of the laid thread. Work your way down the laid thread. When you get to the end of the laid thread, bring the needle back down through the fabric on the outer edge of the loop. To create the double couching stitch, couch the laid thread with the buttonhole stitch. Then repeat going in the opposite direction so that the buttonhole bars cross over the laid thread and the outer edge of the buttonhole is along both sides of the laid thread.
