Community College of Beaver County realized textbooks were costing an average of over $1,000 per student. President Dr. Roger W. Davis knew he had to remove this financial barrier. His team found the solution: Cengage Unlimited for Institutions (CUI), a campus-wide course material subscription plan offering access to all Cengage course materials for one price. The college’s administration encouraged faculty to choose Cengage materials for their courses―lowering costs for their students. Since adopting CUI, Community College of Beaver County’s students continuously describe it as a valuable tool for their education, and faculty are finding new, flexible and creative ways to teach and engage. Also, before adopting CUI, the college’s Pell Grant recipients only received a $100 refund for their textbooks. Since its adoption, the recipients have received an average of $1,000 ― and Dr. Davis expects the refund to increase. Ultimately, Community College of Beaver County has increased student affordability and made required materials more accessible on day one of classes, putting everyone on an equal playing field for student success.
