At the Women in Manufacturing Summit, one question kept coming up. Why are so many companies struggling to realize value from their digital investments? It was not really about AI hype. It was about everything else. Most organizations are not failing because they do not have access to technology. They are failing because of foundational gaps in IT maturity, data ownership, and vendor constraints. I heard it over and over again. They cannot do what they want inside SAP. They are restricted inside Oracle. Add on tools are blocked. Contracts dictate more than strategy. And then we layer AI on top of that. A handful of companies could clearly articulate how they were using AI in practical ways. Many others were repeating high level narratives. The difference was maturity and proof. Aspirational conversations are no longer enough. Exploratory budgets are tightening. If you cannot show measurable impact, the funding disappears. There is also a workforce gap that is rarely discussed. On one end, experienced operators who are hesitant to change. On the other, Gen Z employees who grew up with AI but are afraid to use it professionally. Bridging that gap requires structured training, not buzzwords. Digital transformation is no longer about dreaming big.
