Mozart's Violin Sonata in E Minor, second movement Leora Cohen (violin) & Ariel Lanyi (piano) Einstein, who learned the violin from the age of 5 or 6, was passionate about music and played the violin nearly every day, saying that had he not been a physicist he would have liked to have been a musician. He called his violins Lina (short for violina) and Einstein has etched the name into the wood on the back of this violin. In 2018 a violin made for Einstein in 1933 by cellist and amateur cabinetmaker Oscar H. Steger sold at auction for $500,000. This earlier violin, however, would have been played and used by Einstein from his late teens and into his most scientifically fertile period, so who knows what new ideas were taking place in his mind as he played his beloved Mozart and Bach on this very instrument. The violin is up for auction at Dominic Winter Auctioneers on 8 October 2025.
