(8 Nov 2000) Russian/Nat A high-pressure gas main exploded on Tuesday in Moscow, sending up a jet of flame 20 metres (66 feet) high. No one was hurt by the blast, policemen on the scene told APTN, but firefighters fear that the flame could spread to nearby residential buildings. Russian news agencies said that repair workers had managed to cut off the supply of gas to the line and were waiting for the fire to burn itself out. The gas line is in a mixed industrial and residential area near the Moscow River, close to the landmark Kievsky train station. Roads in the area were cordoned off. A police spokesman was quoted by the ITAR-Tass news agency as saying that officials had not yet determined whether the fire was the result of vandalism or terrorism, or due to a mechanical failure.
